10 Essential Tools for Today's Tarot Practitioner
10 Essential Tools for Today's Tarot Practitioner
By Traci Moon
When you are just starting out it can be overwhelming to know what tools you need in order to assume the role of a tarot practitioner. In the beginning it may seem like all you need is a Tarot Deck and that is it, however, i am going to give you a list of essential tools for you to start out with on your Journey along the path so that it makes your life easier.
Now lets take a look at My Top 10 Essential Tools for Today’s Tarot Practitioner
Essential Tool Number 1
A Tarot Deck
Tarot Deck
In the beginning, of course you need to have your favorite Tarot Deck. I am sure you probably have a few decks on hand. The most important thing is that you resonate with the images on the cards and, at this point have the Rider Waite Smith imagery due to its intricate symbology. The symbols become a language that have indefinite combinations.
You also want to make sure that the deck is a complete 78 card deck, and not just the Major Arcana, which consists of only 22 cards. I bought the above Tarot Alchemia “Tarot Deck” from Japan but did not realize that it only contains the Major Arcana. Although I love this “tarot deck”, it does not contain all 78 cards, therefore it’s not a complete deck. My favorite decks that i use daily are by Eric C. Dunne, Tarot Illuminati, Golden Art Nouveau Tarot and the Mini version Tarot Art Nouveau. You choose a deck that resonates with you! I have a quite a few decks that I incorporate into my practice to keep me on my toes!
Some things to take in consideration when buying a tarot deck is the size.
I enjoy a mini version of tarot decks, due to the fact it is easy to travel with them in your purse, and they are easy to hold in your hands. Depending on your hand size you may like a mini deck. Some cards are long and not so wide, where others are wide all around like an oracle deck for example.
It all comes down to what is comfortable for you to hold in your hands, shuffle and lay out.
I recommend and own This Left-Hand Path Tarot Deck…

Essential Tool Number 2:
A Silk Cloth / Storage Bags
A Silk Cloth / Storage Bag / Waistbag
You will want to store you cards while you are not working with them in order to protect their energy and to keep them clean and dry for your next use. It is essential to find a good cloth. I recommend a Silk Cloth. The places I pick up Silk Handkerchiefs is any second-hand store or vintage shop, at least for me personally. I enjoy finding a random “one-of-a-kind” piece just waiting for me to use it. The one above was bought on a market from an artist in Germany.
Just like clothing, there are specific fabrics that have a frequency and vibration to them and depending on what you are using it for. I love silk, it is delicate and soft and very light weight. It almost feels like it could blow away in the wind like a spiders web, essentially a silk worm silk is the best. It keeps your cards at a regular temperature and wicks moisture away.
I like the Silk Cloth because it is easy to form itself closely to the cards, it keeps moisture away from the paper cards, and it fits easily into a case. Thick fabrics are bulky and may not wick away moisture. However, it is not specifically necessary to only use silk. I have been known to wrap my deck in a great velvet tye dye material made from Tye Dye Mary in Nashville Tennessee from a remanent she had sold me years ago. I even find cotton handkerchiefs work great too. They even make polyester / velvet tarot card holding bags with a drawstring. I use them as well. Find what works for you and run with it.
There is no right or wrong way, the main importance is to keep your cards clean and dry so that they are ready for you to use them the next time you decide to read them.
Another point of using a Silk Cloth to wrap your deck after you are done reading, is to keep all your cards together in one place, so that the cat does not accidentally knock over your deck, dropping one card (or more) on the floor, for example. The cloth keeps your cards neatly and securely together, which makes you properly prepared for the next reading.
You will also probably want to have a waist bag that is specifically designated for your Tarot Cards Cellphone and Wallet, that way you can grab your cards and head out the door to a party. You always want to have the cards on you because you never know when you will find an opportunity to make money and read your cards. Killstar has a few different options that work to carry your cards. I prefer the Killstar Skye Waistbag, their Demonizer Waistbag, and their I Am The Night Sling Bag . You can use a purse specifically designed for your cards, it is completely up to you! I have also been looking into leather options on Etsy such as the leather Tree of Life Brown Tarot Deck Box with Belt Loops. I also love Pocket belts for festivals and traveling.
Essential Tool Number 3:
Table Cloth
Table Cloth
When you lay your cards out on a table you risk getting them dirty from unseen sticky or wet messes. It is always good to wipe the table top clean and dry, before setting down a portable table cloth that you take with you, where ever you go.
There are many options and the sky is the limit when it comes down to which cloth you decide to use.
I purchase my altar cloths from LuciferianApotheca.com. They have a wide array of Left-Hand Path altar cloths. I also use Killstar.com round blankets in the lifestyle tab, that I lay across my card table. Not only does the thicker blanket keep your arms warmer during the colder months, its also look cool. A cloth or a blanket keeps the shuffling and laying out of the cards at a minimum noise level which helps when you are reading your clients over the phone, so you can communicate with your clients with unnecessary noise. It can be annoying to hear the loud shuffling of the cards hitting the table, if you ask me.
Essential Tool Number 4:
Card Table
Card Table
Although you could essentially use any table, a traditional card playing table is ideal because the height is set up specifically for playing cards. A kitchen table for instance, is not, its height is for eating food and will much taller than a card table, and after while, your arms will be extremely tired from holding them up so far.
In order to keep your body happy, so your mind can work better, I suggest a traditional card playing table where your elbows can rest in a lower position, naturally.
There are all sorts of online stores that offer card tables and chairs that go with them. For instance, Amazon.com, WalMart.com, Overstock.com, Wayfair.com. Theses are but a few options. Where is your favorite place to shop online? Also, grandma or grandpa probably has a card table laying around somewhere in storage, as they were quite popular to have around in order to play card games!
Essential Tool Number 5
Bluetooth headphones/ Headset
Bluetooth Headphones / Headset
A bluetooth headset is a more professional way to go when you are reading tarot. You can work from anywhere and not feel tied down to your phone. I prefer a bluetooth / wireless set, so that I can leave my phone on the charger, or not have it in the way, when I am laying out the cards. I have a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort headphones which has legendary sound and I can move around at leisure. They completely cover your ear, which is nice if you do long readings. I also use them for listening to music, but they work fine for calls. Depending on your phone, you can plug earphones in and work that way, too. This is not an option for iPhone X. I personally do not like earbuds in my ears. They hurt me after only a small time wearing them even though they do have multiple size buds that are exchangeable. It’s just not my thing.
Before I had the iPhone X I was using the Voyager 5200 Office and UC Series over the ear mono bluetooth headset. The only drawback, is that my iPhone X does not connect to this for some reason. My other iPhones connected just fine and I liked using it. You can wear it on either ear, just by flipping the microphone. I have 3 of them and keep them fully charged just incase I have a long sessions or many readings to do or I misplace one in a purse or coat pocket. They are small and I find that I misplace them so having multiple sets is a good idea. You can also plug in the usb to charge them while using them, unlike the Bose Quiet Comfort where they require you to turn off the headset and fully charge them before they are operable. Which ever set you decide to go with, make sure they are compatible with the phone you are using as some are dedicated to Android exclusively.
Another option is using USB Headsets. You can just plug them in your phone or computer and head off into your next zoom call. I personally do not like to have a cord. So, it’s up to you.
Essential Tool Number 6
USB Studio Ring Light With Phone Holder
USB Studio Ring Light With Phone Holder
I have the Bower 8” Selfie Ring Studio Light, with extendable tripod and phone holder. There are several colors of light to choose from, such as White Light, Natural Light, and Warm Light. What I found is that although it can extend up to 51” it falls over easily and the plastic ring pops off. It really is not a good bang for your buck but since I have it, well, I use it. I don’t recommend to run out to Walmart and buy this one. I am looking for a more heavy-duty tripod that won’t fall over, esp. if your phone is in the holder! However, when it is sitting on the card table and not extended it does pretty good. It is a USB light, so it has to be plugged into my computer, which is annoying, but I set the card table up next to my computer to use it. You do not have to use a USB light but I find that when I am reading cards in the dark, I don’t like to have the overhead light on, so this light course works good. You can also use a standard plug in lamp if you desire!
Essential Tool Number 7
Crystals & Stones
Crystals & Stones
I like to have a plethora of crystals and stones available to use along side my tarot deck and intuitive counseling sessions. Before and after a reading, I like to charge my tarot deck with specific crystals either by laying the crystals and stones on my card table around the tarot deck or even setting a crystal directly on top of my deck in-between readings if I am doing multiple readings in a day.
You can read more about Astrological Birthstones, Learn about how to cleanse and program your stones.
You can always store your tarot and crystals in a box like this one made by WoodskaStudio on Etsy
Essential Tool Number 7
Candles
Candles
Candles represent the element of Fire, there is also an element of wax called Ceromancy and Capromancy where you can use divination with the smoke. I like to incorporate all the elements into my readings, and magick rituals, you can do this by using candles. Each candle can be infused with an intention. You can set the tone with a specific color of candle as well.
Candle Magick is a major part of working with tarot and the occult magick. Each color represents specific intentions that you infuse with your intention. There is no right or wrong way to work with candles.

Meditation is an essential part of everyday life.
Like any ritual you can make it as simple or as elaborate as you desire. I like to take time in the morning just after waking up to meditate because I am still in the dream the zone and it is easiest time-of-day for me to enter into this state of being. There are some tools that you can utilize when it comes to the ritual of meditation. I have only listed a few that I use, but there are so many more. Which are your favorite and which do you use? Comment Below.
Through out the day I listen often to the Pinealwave Instant Third Eye Stimulation Meditation album, that i purchased from Bandcamp. You can also listen to it on YouTube, however I chose to just purchase the tracks in order to support the creation of music.
I study Astrology and have a medial astrologer friend, Nicholas Schizzano who with his partner Crystal Cavalier, offer some amazing Tibetan Singing Bowls. They are in alignment with the 7 Sacred Planets and corresponding metals. A truly amazing set for an affordable price.
Gold – Sun
Silver – Moon
Tibetan Silver-Mercury
Copper – Venus
Iron – Mars
Tin – Jupiter
White Metal – Saturn
One can easily slip into the meditation zone by creating and listening to the tones emanated by these hand-made meditation bowls from Nepal.
Of course you can choose which ever set of Chakra or meditation bowl sets you like. The ones i listed are just for reference purposes, in different price ranges. Again, none of these tools are necessary but are nice to have. You can even simply, look up meditation singing bowl music on YouTube for a Free Experience.
When I am meditating I like to sit on the floor.
Sometimes the floor becomes hard and my back starts to hurt after a period of time. This is when a meditation mat or pillow comes in really handy. I personally enjoy sitting on a meditation mat. I have listed some mats and pillows that are fun. Click the links to explore possibilities.
Most of us probably meditate and don’t even know it. When we are washing dishes, and we “zone out” while washing dishes, this is a form of meditation.
Being thankful and grateful is also a form of awake meditation that you can do just shortly after waking up. I always take the time to be thankful and grateful for things like my bed, blankets, the sun, and warmth of my home. What do you have to be thankful and grateful for?
